Context
When we designed Goal Savings, the idea was to help users save with intention, for a set amount and a set date. But we also knew life doesn’t always fit into a calendar. People face emergencies, unexpected bills, and situations where they just need quick access to their money.

That’s where Savings Box came in. We built it as the opposite of Goal Savings: no targets, no deadlines, just a safe place to set money aside and access it whenever needed. In many ways, it was designed to act as an emergency fund.
But there was a catch. If the money was too easy to withdraw, people might start treating Savings Box like a regular wallet, not true savings. To balance flexibility with discipline, we introduced a simple rule:
One free withdrawal per quarter.
After that, any extra withdrawals came with a small 1% fee
This little bit of friction encouraged people to think twice before dipping into their savings, while still keeping funds available when they really needed them.

The design challenge here was clarity, users had to instantly understand:
How many free withdrawals they had left.
When the next free withdrawal would unlock.
What it would cost if they went beyond it.
Without that transparency, even a tiny 1% fee could feel unfair. So I designed flows and microcopy that explained the rules upfront, reducing the chance of surprises.
